The Trench Dictionary
The language of the position, codified. Outsiders read it as a glossary. Insiders read it as confirmation.
O-Line
- Pancake
- A block so dominant the defender ends up flat on his back.
- Hog Mollies
- Veteran slang for the offensive line. Affectionate. In-group.
- Combo Block
- Two O-linemen double-teaming before one releases to the next level.
- Pull
- When a guard or tackle leaves his spot to lead-block on a sweep.
- Get Off The Ball
- The first step. The whole position is about the snap of the muscle.
- Eat First
- The fraternity ritual. Linemen always eat first because they earned it.
D-Line
- Swim Move
- Knock the OL's hands down; swim your arm over his shoulder.
- Bull Rush
- Run straight through the guy. The honest move. The trench tax.
- Rip
- Drive your arm up under the OL's pad to break free.
- Spin Move
- Commit to one side; pivot off the contact. Sexy. Risky.
- Three Technique
- D-tackle alignment outside the guard's shoulder. The most disruptive interior spot.
- Wreck The Pocket
- The job description.
Trench shared
- A-Gap / B-Gap / C-Gap
- The lanes between OL/DL. Linemen think in gaps; QBs in lanes.
- The Pocket
- What the OL builds. What the DL destroys. The geometry of every pass.
- The Whistle
- When the play ends. What linemen play through right up until.
- Brotherhood
- The Line Play community. Capitalized. Always.
