The Combo Block (and the Climb)

A combo block is two linemen driving one defender together before one of them climbs to a linebacker. Get the timing right and a short gain becomes a long one; get it wrong and someone runs free.

The combo block is the heartbeat of the zone running game. Two adjacent linemen — one covered, one uncovered — work together to drive a down defender off the ball with four hands, then one of them climbs off late and clean to block a linebacker at the second level. It's how the line both moves the down man and accounts for the next level on the same play.

The whole thing is timing and eyes. Drive the down lineman first and stay square; feel the linebacker's flow; and climb at the right moment — not so early the down lineman splits the double, not so late the linebacker beats you to the ball. Coach Jay's run-game cues apply: stay condensed, close the space, and go lateral to get your fit, then forward.

Coach Jay’s cues

  • Four hands, one man — firstBoth linemen get their inside hands on the down defender and drive him off the ball together before anyone thinks about climbing.
  • Over and back — get the fit, then goWork lateral to win your fit on the down lineman, then drive forward; don't turn and lose force early.
  • Feel the backer, climb on timeThe climbing blocker reads the linebacker's flow and comes off late and clean — square to the backer, never lunging.
  • Don't let him split itThe lineman staying on the down man takes him over completely as his partner climbs — no daylight between you.

How to do it

  1. Both hit the down manCovered and uncovered lineman both strike the down defender with inside hands, low and condensed.
  2. Drive and readDrive him off the ball together; the climbing blocker reads the linebacker's path.
  3. Take him overThe staying blocker squares up and takes the down man fully as the climb begins.
  4. Climb on timeThe climbing blocker comes off late and clean, square to the linebacker — not too early, not too late.
  5. Finish both blocksDown man driven, linebacker walled — finish through the whistle.

Drills to train it

  • Combo-and-climbTwo linemen drive a down defender; on the coach's cue (linebacker flow), one climbs and walls the backer.
  • Take-over repsPractice the staying blocker squaring and taking the down man over so he never splits the double.
  • Timing on airRep the climb timing against a walking linebacker so the comeoff is late and clean.

Common mistakes

  • Climbing too early — the down lineman splits the double and blows up the run.
  • Climbing too late — the linebacker runs free to the ball.
  • Lunging at the linebacker instead of staying square and closing the space.
  • Turning and losing force on the double instead of "over and back" to the fit.

Questions linemen ask

What is a combo block in football?
A combo block is when two adjacent offensive linemen — one covered, one uncovered — work together to drive a down defender off the ball, then one of them climbs off to block a linebacker at the second level. It lets the line both move the down man and account for the next level on the same play, and it's the foundation of the zone running game.
When do you climb on a combo block?
The climbing blocker reads the linebacker's flow and comes off the double-team late and clean — at the moment the down defender is controlled and the staying blocker can take him over alone. Climb too early and the down lineman splits the double; climb too late and the linebacker beats you to the ball. Timing and eyes are everything.
How do two linemen combo block without letting the defender split it?
Both get their inside hands on the down defender and drive him together first; then, as one climbs, the staying blocker squares up and takes the down man over completely so there's no daylight between the two blockers. The phrase is "over and back" — win the lateral fit, then drive forward, and never turn and lose force early.
