Get-off

The first step from the stance. The single biggest defensive-line weapon.

Also called: get off, first step defensive line

Get-off is the defensive lineman's first step off the snap — the explosion out of the stance that beats the offensive lineman to the spot. It is the single biggest weapon on the defensive line: a great get-off turns an average rusher into a problem because the blocker is always a step behind. You build it by reading the ball (not the count), firing a tight, low first step, and getting your hands and pads working before the blocker can settle. The offensive equivalent is the first step — the same six inches that decide most reps.
