The Best Gloves for Linemen
A receiver glove is built to catch. A lineman glove is built to strike, grab cloth, and protect the back of the hand. Two different tools — here is the one you actually want.
Linemen do not need tacky receiver palms as much as they need two things: grip on a jersey and protection for the back of the hand and fingers. That is why true lineman gloves have padded, reinforced backs — you are punching helmets, shoulder pads, and the ground, and getting your hands stepped on in the pile, all game.
The trade-off is grip versus protection. A heavily padded lineman glove protects the most but can feel stiff; a lighter 'skill-lineman' hybrid keeps more grip and finger feel for guys who want to grab and control. Most linemen want a padded-back glove with a grippy (but not receiver-tacky) palm and a snug, secure wrist closure.
